About Us
corruptspanish.church — Examination of Conscience is an investigative journalism project examining power, accountability, and institutional conduct within the Catholic Church in Spain and its networks of influence.
It is not, under any circumstances, a project against the Catholic Church. Its focus is the conduct of those who use the Church in Spain — and elsewhere — as an instrument to advance their own interests and positions of power.
From Jacques Pintor to Examination of Conscience
This site continues the work begun in Chile in 2014 by the multidisciplinary Jacques Pintor team. Its previous publishing platform, jacquespintor.com, spent years publishing documented investigations into clerical abuse, failures of governance, and the interplay between ecclesiastical authority, legal strategy, and mechanisms of silencing.
The editorial team was — and remains — internationally distributed, with members living and working in different jurisdictions. Judicial and administrative actions taken in Spain were concentrated on one member of the team, who over an extended period was subjected to multiple proceedings and measures that also affected the public availability of the team’s journalistic work.
No trial has yet been held in the pending case on the allegations brought against that member of the team. Nor has any judgment in that case declared the journalistic content at issue to be false.
Nevertheless, through sustained legal action — involving, in particular, the Spanish law firm Cremades & Calvo-Sotelo — and proceedings initiated by individuals named in the investigations, a pretrial judicial order was obtained requiring the removal of journalistic work written or edited by, or otherwise involving, the affected member of the team.
The order was not based on any prior judicial finding that the reporting was false. Its enforcement reached content distributed through digital platforms and affected publications produced or accessible outside Spain, raising significant questions concerning freedom of expression, proportionality, and cross-border journalism.
jacquespintor.com did not close at the height of this pressure, but it was closed by force later, after the cumulative effects of that pressure had taken their toll.
That editorial chapter has now ended.
Investigations and Their Consequences
Investigations conducted by the Jacques Pintor team have helped bring to light conduct that subsequently resulted in judicial, canonical, or administrative consequences.
These include the canonical convictions of Roberto Ferrer, María Carmen Amador, and the priest Antonio Mas, in connection with the effort led by Cardinal Juan José Omella and Jesuit Germán Arana against Manuel Ureña, then Archbishop of Zaragoza, as well as the subsequent removal of the Rev. Gonzalo Ruipérez from his parish in Madrid.
More recently, journalistic work examining the handling of sexual-abuse allegations in Mexico during the leadership of the Superior General of the Piarist Fathers, now the Bishop of Huesca-Jaca, who was Superior General of the order at the time. At Jordi Picazo’s suggestion, the family contacted the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors. A subsequent communication sent to the victim’s mother stated that Pope Leo XIV had instructed the competent dicasteries to investigate the case, leading to the opening of a preliminary inquiry into how the matter had been handled.
These cases are presented and documented individually. The existence of a journalistic investigation does not in itself establish legal or canonical responsibility: corruptspanish.church distinguishes among documented facts, testimony, allegations, decisions by the competent authorities, and journalistic interpretation.
A New Chapter
corruptspanish.church — Examination of Conscience does not exist to reopen every procedural step or repeat arguments already preserved in court records, archives, and distributed documentation. It exists because dispersal can itself become a form of erasure, and because the removal of published work through pretrial measures — imposed before a trial has been held on the allegations against the affected team member and without any prior judicial finding that the removed content was false — deserves to be documented.
What we publish here will not be reactive. It will not follow judicial timetables or be dictated by them. Nor will it reproduce, point by point, everything readers may previously have encountered elsewhere.
This project has a different purpose: to bring together what was dispersed; to distinguish what matters from what is incidental; and to describe, calmly and precisely, the mechanisms through which investigative journalism can be restricted without being formally prohibited.
Some articles will address what happened to a particular member of the team. Others will step back to examine the broader implications for cross-border journalism, editorial responsibility, and the narrowing of the space for legitimate expression through legal and institutional pressure.
The project works from documentary evidence, journalistic sources, testimony, and open sources. Individuals and institutions mentioned in our reporting may submit documentation, identify possible inaccuracies, request corrections, or exercise their right of reply.
Authorship and Accountability
The work is published under the collective editorial byline Jacques Pintor. Contributors may publish under their own names or under pseudonyms, depending on the circumstances and the risks involved.
Here, authorship is not exposure: it is accountability.
This is not a campaign site.
It does not ask for sympathy or mobilization.
It asks only for attention.
This second phase does not close an argument.
It opens a new chapter.
From the ashes, we do not shout.
We rebuild.
